Identity Theft Protection: Check Your Credit Report

Identity theft is on the rise and it is important to do everything in your power to prevent it. One great way that is effective in preventing identity theft is being aware of your credit reports.

While checking your credit card balances and account information is a great preventive measure for preventing identity theft checking your credit report is actually one of the best ways to prevent it. You can go to credit reporting agencies and check out your credit report and this may keep you from being another victim of identity theft.

Checking your credit report is such an effective method of identity theft prevention because credit reporting agencies keep track of all your credit accounts, the balances, and payments made on those accounts. They also figure out what credit risk level you are and many creditors check these credit reporting agencies before deciding to extend you credit.

Poor credit ratings can result in higher interest rates and can actually prevent you from receiving credit from some credit card companies. Many people have a bad credit score because they have a lot of credit or sometimes because they have not paid off current credit.

While often people are responsible for bad credit scores it is possible that someone could have stolen your identity resulting in bad reports on your credit report. It is possible for someone to steal your social security number and to open a new credit card account in your name but if you check your credit report you will be able to see this and hopefully stop this.

Be sure that you are always aware of what your credit report contains so you will know when someone has made changes to your report that are not correct. If you come across something that is not right on your credit report be sure to contact that account holder as soon as you can to alert them to possible identity theft.

It is important that you check your credit report at least annually to be sure it is correct. Credit reporting agencies are required by the United States to give each person a free credit report at least once every year. Since you are able to receive your credit report for free once a year from each credit reporting agency there is no excuse for you not to monitor your credit report for identity theft.

Be sure to look for information that is incorrect. When you look at your credit report keep your eyes open for any account that you are not aware of. You should also be sure that the address listed on your credit report is correct. If the address is wrong it could mean that someone opened an account under your name from that address. You should also be sure that there are no inquiries made to your credit card report that you were not aware of as well.

Being aware of how to protect yourself is the greatest way to keep from having identity theft happen to you. Always be aware of your credit report and what things are being reported on your credit report. If you have not taken the time to check your credit report recently it is important that you take the time to do so, which could save you from identity theft in the future.
