Credit Card Fraud Protection

Prevent Identity Theft When Shopping Online

There is an increasing amount of people who depend on the web, which has led to increased instances of identity theft occurring online. Many people use the internet to make a variety of purchases and there can be fear of identity theft when doing this. It is important for people to realize that actually online identity theft usually brings with it the same amount of risk that using a credit card in any other way does.

Even when you are aware of how to protect yourself online from identity theft it is important that you pass on this knowledge to your children. Identity thieves are after things that are way more valuable than money.

You should never provide personal information to people online. If people ask for this information it should immediately send up a red flag in your mind. Even if you think you know someone it is important to keep your information to yourself.

Never provide your full name or your full address to anyone online, whether you are in a chat room, a forum, or in private chat. You should also never give your social security number to anyone online. Be sure that you do not provide any of this information in profiles about yourself either.

Some may be fearful of doing any shopping online but online shopping is becoming more and more popular and it is ok to make purchases online. If you do decide to make online purchases be sure that you make sure to do it wisely. Be sure that you know it is a safe place to make purchases. Be sure that the site you use when giving out credit card information is secured.

You can see if the site is secured by looking for the “S” in the browser window, which will come after the http. If you can not be sure it is a secure site then do not make any purchases there. It is also a good idea to only use your credit card to purchase things from sites that are reputable. If you do not want to use your credit card information you can set up an account, such as Paypal, to make online payments without giving your personal information. You should always be sure to type in website addresses instead of just following the links to a site. It is possible for links to lead to sites that are fakes and will take your information and use it in a bad way.

Every time you decide to make an online purchase you need to remember what you know about identity theft protection. It only takes one time of dropping your guard and leaving your information unprotected to result in identity theft that will cause you many problems in the future.
