Ways to Prevent Identity Theft

With the rise in identity theft a smart consumer should always be aware of taking necessary steps to preventing this from happening. It is helpful to not only know what you can do to prevent identity theft, as well as what you should not do.

In order to keep identity theft from happening to you there are some things that you should never do. Many times identity theft has occurred because a person has made a mistake and done something they should have refrained from doing. The following are some “don’ts” for identity theft protection.

The first thing you should never, ever, do is to give your social security number to someone. It is important that you keep this information private and some states even offer you the option to not have this on your drivers license. If you are sure to keep your social security private then it will be more difficult for anyone to get a credit card that is in your name.

Secondly you should never wait to report a lost or stolen credit card. As soon as you lose your credit card be sure that you call the credit card company to report it lost right away. Do not waste any precious time trying to look for it but report it immediately.

Credit card companies can cancel the credit card or freeze the credit card and can issue you a new one. Most stolen credit cards are used within the first 24 hours of being stolen so time is important.

You should also be sure to never give away any of your personal information such as your full name, full address, or bank account information. It is possible for someone to use this information to start taking out a loan in your name. You are especially a good target if you have a great credit history. Be sure you keep this kind of information to yourself as well. Especially never give out this kind of information online.

Do not forget to use your spy ware protection when you are online too. Many people have spy ware protection but fail to keep it running. Be sure it is running so you can prevent spy ware from being used on your computer. You should also never use your credit card on a site that is not secure. Always look for sites that are secure before you use your credit card.

Never take a credit card that does not provide identity theft protection. Most credit card companies to have identity theft protection that kicks in if your card has been lost or stolen. Be sure that you take the time to research a credit card companies identity theft policies before you take a credit card from them.

Just taking the time to follow these few tips can keep you from becoming an identity theft victim. You can take your own steps to protect yourself and can be aware of things not to do as well. Keep yourself from being a victim.
