Most people are aware what phishing is or have heard the word. But many usually don’t think it can happen to them. Well it can. And with the added sophistication of the attackers you’ll need to be more aware. Though the Phishing/Trojan scam has been around for awhile -it is now on the rise-and it is hitting consumer and enterprises alike.
Phishing/Zeus Scam for Enterprises
What, or how does the Phishing/Zeus scam work? The Phishing/Zeus Trojan scam is aimed at Outlook Web Access users within organizations. The employee will receive an email from the System Administrator that states that they need to modify their email settings. They will click the link given, thinking that viewing what appears to be their access site. It is not. In truth it is really a site that could be residing in Columbia, Romania, Russia or even China. You’ll be asked to download a file, the file is, in truth, the Zeus Trojan. Their purpose is to track of all the individuals online movements.
Phishing/Zbot Trojan
This scam is hitting consumers on Facebook. Their purpose is to get the users credentials. Once the user enters their credentials they are asked to download a file-you got it-its the Zbot Trojan. The Zbot Trojan is a “banking trojan”, so you know what they are after-your banking account information.
Protect Yourself
You should try to use as many safeguards to protect yourself online. Here are some methods:
1. Keep firewalls, anti-virus and anti-spam software up-to-date
2. Do not click on links – or cut and paste the link into your browser. Banks never tell you to click on links.
3. Regular scan your system
4. Most are looking for holes in Internet Explorer-so make sure that you have all the critical updates and system updates are current. Or-use a different browser.
To conclude, always be careful about clicking on a link within an email, especially if they are asking for personal information.
